Week 19 - Project development

by Javier Hernández

Assignment

Complete your final project, tracking your progress:

What is the deadline? how much time do I have left?

What tasks have been completed, and what tasks remain?

What has worked? what hasn't?

What questions need to be resolved?

What will happen when?

What have you learned?

Project management:

Triage

Documentation during development

Demand- vs supply-side time management

Spiral development

system integration

finish quality

Where possible, you should make rather than buy the parts of your project.

Progress tracking

What is the deadline? how much time do I have left?

I am a continuing student and I started the course in 2016, that year I did some assignments and I was researching and thinking about what project to carry out. For 2017, carry out the project and present it that same year.

I presented my project on June 14, 2017, but only the presentation, I had to finish the reports and make some improvements because in the presentation Neil asked if I had made any specific board for the project.

I could say that the presentation helped me to validate the mechanical design and the operation in general. Now it was necessary to manufacture a specific board and that was done successfully.

Finally I'm finishing reports until the last day, today is june 27 of 2018. "You can always do better".

What tasks have been completed, and what tasks remain?

I made the presentation of the final project last year, at that time I seemed to understand that neil gershenfield's appreciation was that he should have made a board, and he was right.

Although during the past year I focused on understanding how the machine works, I left aside the manufacture of a board to use an arduino.

This year I made a board for the final project and I believe that it was successful.

This project was born from the need to manufacture wings quickly. Some of the users of my workshop are students of aerospace engineering and do not have a tool to manufacture wings quickly and effectively

What has worked? what hasn't?

I think everything worked, maybe worse or better but it worked.

What questions need to be resolved?

I would talk about things that could be improved and the list could be long, I would design the machine in a different way. But as an exercise I am satisfied.

What have you learned?

I have improved my knowledge of mechanical systems, I have experienced and learned about universal gcode sender and set-up of the engine system step by step.

Project management:

Triage

I can not say that the choice of the project has been wrong or the choice of the solution of the project, it has helped me to learn. Another thing is if after the project was finished I would implement another solution.

Documentation during development

I have learned, it was not my custom to document the way it is done in fab academy, and I am sure that it can still be done better. life is an evolution and constant learning, I still working....

Demand- vs supply-side time management

Time was my big problem, fab academy is a course that requires almost a complete dedication and in my case time is very scarce, managing a lab and being an entrepreneur at the same time requires a lot of time, dedication and effort, like the fab academy

I'm grateful to fab lab Barcelona for giving me the opportunity to do the course extended in time

Spiral development

This project has been gestated and developed for 2 years and knowing that the cost of this could become high decided to opt for a linear / sequential model. If some part of the project did not work in a fine way, it looked for the solution without changing the part or system, the project had been thought out very carefully. I must say that time was also an important factor if we consider that I could devote little time

System integration

While I have 3 systems defined, these systems did not require an integration for its operation

Finish quality

I am satisfied with the quality of the project, the materials, the operation and the finishing in general. The documentation is improvable
