Invention, Intellectual Property, and Income - Assignment 18

Discovering Invention, Intellectual Property, and Income

So the objective of this week is to get introduced to what is an Invention, what are the differet Intellectual property options and how to create income from a project.

There are many types of new foundings that are considered to be inventions. This could be any new product that solves a certain problem or achieves a certain objective, or a research result that would be a basis to new creations.

But in order protect this new invention from being abused by other people or organizations other than the creators, the creators have to patent their new invention. There are many options for the patents that could be used. Among those patent types are the following:
  1. Utility Patent that protects the invention for 20 years from filing
  2. Design Patent that prtects the invention for 15 years from granting the patent
Those patent could be private or public, depending on the inventor.

In addition to that, the inventor can file for a provisional patent that protects the invention for 1 year until the inventor converts it into a full patent.

Another type of Intellectual Property is Copyrights. It is mainly used to protect original works of authorship, such as designs, software, circuits and many other creations. However, there are many different types of copyrights that differ in the right to reproduce, modify, distribute, perform and display the project.

In the end, there is also what is known by "Trademarks",that protects a certain name, brand, or logo.

Assignment

We had an Individual Assignment this week which was mainly to develop a plan for dissemination of my Final Project.

Talking about My Final Project

So my Final Project was mainly building a robot that could survey existing pipes underground, in order to build a 3d mapping for it, when it is not available, especially for very old pipes.

Based on my research, many people tried to build pipe survey robots previously but for other main objectives, which is mainly checking pipes for any deformations an problems. However, most of the avialable robots are very expensive to buy or rent.

Saying that i wanted to build a fabable robot that is much cheaper than what is available in the market, and could help many communities all over the world, who could be facing the same problem.

I put a lot of effort and hard work building this robot. It has many different parts that could be used individually in other projects. Among those parts are the following:

  1. The Mechanical Parts such as the frame of the robot and the Mecanum Wheels that are installed on Nema 17 stepper motors
  2. The Electronic Board -PCB which is a Fabable PCB that has the capabilities of an Arduino UNO, with an on-board MPU-9250 module, micro SD transflash module, and 4 stepper motor drivers (Polulu)
  3. The Code that is downloaded on the baord to control the robot
However due to the limited time available, i believe that it could be much better and enhanced to achieve additional objectives. The great thing about my design, is that it could be easily edited to use the same robot for many different usages. You can easily add more capabilities to the same robot, such as Cameras, GPS modules, Temp and Humidity sensors, chemical and gas sensors, and many others, thus achieving many different objectives using the same base.

Thus i would love to see my project enhanced and used by others who could find it helpful for thier personal projects.

But i would dislike the fact that someone will be using my project in a commercial one.

Thus I want PSB - Pipe Surveying Bot to be an open hardware and software project that could be used by others to start thier personal projects.

To choose the licence i wanted to use, i visited the Creative Commons Website and choose the Licence Features i wanted. To make my decision, i had to answer two main questions:
  1. Do i want to allow adaptations of my work to be shared?
  2. And my answer was: Yes, as long as others share alike.
  3. Do i want to allow commercial uses of my work?
  4. And my answer was No
As a result, to what i previously discribed, i chose to use Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) for all my projects, drawings, designs, images, videos.
In addition to that, all source code are protected under Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)

My designed PSB is not considred a Million dollar innovation in the market. However, it could be used by many people who could use it. It could be used for fun to build remote controlled cars. Or it could be used to achieve a certain objective. Saying that, i would love my project to remain open in the future.
