Week 18: Invention, Intellectual Property and Business Models

From the very begining of this FabAcadmy's cycle I decided to use CC as my favourite license.

The normal Copyright © means different things in each country. That means this license is not a common thing all over the world. Mostly if we talk about it, US Copyright are ment. This Licese is protecting the corporations and their intelectual properties. It is tied to a certain period of time. Good explanation of this license I have found on this german siteUrherberrecht. Urheberrecht is the title of german copyright which is a bit different from the US Copyright. While copyright law in Germany has the meaning of protection of authorship, in the US it is more the protection of the economy and the companies rather than the contractors.

I am against the idea of cumulation of property. Nobody should be able to decide on the life and health of other people just because he has more money. No one should have so much greater share of the earth, because the earth belongs to all of us. In my opinion, single person should not accumulate riches as this is the cause of the great wars, hunger and natural disasters in the world. I am explicitly against patenting, especially when it comes to patents on food such as cereals. Thus, the power over the livelihood of all people in the hands of a few.

I also got a glimpse an Apache what I like too. Particular for Apache is that you are allowed to use open source files change them and distribute them under reffering your source.
But it is mainly for Software developement and right now I think I will not need it in the near future.

GNU General Public License 3 Version 3, 29 June 2007 says:
"Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim copies of this license document, but changing it is not allowed."

GNU GPL and Apache are very similar licences. The only difference between GNU and Apache License is that GNU follows the Copyleft rights and Apache follows the rights of the Free Software. Copyleft means that it is allowed to modify and distribute free software by referring to the source, but it is not allowed to restrict your developments as they remain part of the copyleft license level. Free Software allows you to use, modify, and distribute free software based on your source, and your developments may not necessarily be Apache-licensed. But I got this wonderful opportunity to join the FabAcademy which is mainly based on open source tutorials and ideas, that I felt positively bound to keep CC for all my works.

"Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that enables the sharing and use of creativity and knowledge through free legal tools. Our free, easy-to-use copyright licenses provide a simple, standardized way to give the public permission to share and use your creative work — on conditions of your choice. CC licenses let you easily change your copyright terms from the default of “all rights reserved” to “some rights reserved.” Creative Commons licenses are not an alternative to copyright. They work alongside copyright and enable you to modify your copyright terms to best suit your needs. We’ve collaborated with intellectual property experts around the world to ensure that our licenses work globally."

The Creative Commons logo should be allways downloaded from this site. The symbols that are contained in CC logo are:

CC logo has six options and three layer designs:

1. legal code
2. human readable
3. machine code
to ensure that lawyers, normal users and machines can understand the rights behind.

First, choose the conditions that you want to apply to your work.

Attribution
All CC licenses require that others who use your work in any way must give you credit the way you request, but not in a way that suggests you endorse them or their use. If they want to use your work without giving you credit or for endorsement purposes, they must get your permission first.

ShareAlike
You let others copy, distribute, display, perform, and modify your work, as long as they distribute any modified work on the same terms. If they want to distribute modified works under other terms, they must get your permission first.

NoDerivs
You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform only original copies of your work. If they want to modify your work, they must get your permission first.

You are free to:
Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format

Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially.

This license is acceptable for Free Cultural Works. The licensor cannot revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms.

I think the idea of free software and overall free access to resources very good. This will give those who can not afford the expensive licenses a fair chance to make interesting projects, to enrich their environment and possibly the whole country. I hope that it will do more for the environment and that the decentralization of energy supply will progress. How many interesting ideas have emerged from an open source project (for example Linux or Blender) People have to break new ground in the question of ownership.
