WEEK 16

Wildcard Week

01

Asigment

  • Design and produce something with a digital fabrication process (incorporating computer-aided design and manufacturing) not covered in another assignment, documenting the requirements that your assignment meets, and including everything necessary to reproduce it. Possibilities include (but are not limited to) composites, textiles, biotechnology, robotics, and cooking.

For this week, I would like to make a 3d wall mold but natural with leaves of plants.

I have designed a mold with fusion 360 with a dimension of 0.5 cm x 0.5 cm

Then the design will export it to slicer with the modality of relief construction.

Export the planes in dxf and import into the cnc laser software and cut, as week 07.

With industrial rubber for wood I have glued all the pieces.

While the mold was drying, I went to look for leaves of thin and large plants. Then, I cut the stem to handle the leaves well because they were going to stick with resin.

The main materials are: leaves, special bag vacuum valves, resin, disposable cups, plastic kitchen.

I have measured the amount of leaves of the plant in the mold. I then cover the mold with plastic kitchen so that the leaves with resin do not stick to the mold.

I have used the transparent c21 resin and a hardening catalyst, with a disposable cup, I have placed a moderate resin ransin and with 5 drop of catalyst and mix for 5 min.

With glove and brush I applied the resin mixture to the leaves on top of the mold.

with the kitchen plastic I placed on top of the leaves because otherwise the leaves would stick to the bag

Place the mold inside the bag and close it.

With a vacuum we place it in the valve of the bag so that it makes the vacuum and that the bag takes shape of the mold and wait and dry. the resin takes 30min to dry.

After 1 hour no history that is dry and wait for the next day. the leaves with the resin did not work, it did not dry properly.

My second attempt is to use fabric, I found a fabric in my house. I have used the same technique of putting plastic on both sides so that it does not stick to the mold and the bag.

I measured the plastic according to the mold and the cloth in two pieces.

Carefully mix the resin with the catalyst and apply it to the fabric with little resin so that a large amount does not dry fast in the cup.

After applying the resin to the two pieces of fabric, I covered it with plastic and placed it inside the bag.

with the vacuum cleaner I have connected the bag to make the vacuum, and with the hand, I arrange the fabric in the mold so that it enhances the details and wait to dry it.

After drying it was just over 1 hour, you can take it out of the bag.

Then with scissors, I cut the excess plastic.

And separates the plastic from the mold on both sides.

With a marker I have drawn on top of the detail model to make it look nicer

Under the light you can see that it is something translucent but under the shade you can not tell it is translucent.
