Invention, Intellectual Property, and Income

For this week it was required to Develop a plan for dissemination of my final project, to do this first I need to understand what is intellectual property and licensing.

Intellectual Property:

As I looked over the internet I've found that it's a idea than came from your mind which resulted due to it's creativity, such as patents, copyrights, names in used in commerce (Ex.KFC),...etc. Furthermore, I found in Wikipedia more vivid explanation and much more examples if you need.

As it's exactly said and simplified: intangible property that is the result of creativity, such as patents, copyrights, etc.

License:

I think it's pretty obvious what a license is, A license is an official permission or permit to do, use, or own something (as well as the document of that permission or permit).
Also, license authorize the use, performance, or release of (something) and it's the easiest way to get money when you have the license (you're called the "licensor"), because a company could incubate the idea and market for it and sell it, and based on an agreement between both of you you take share from the profits :D

Dissemination plan:

How will I start selling my product?

I would try to find a local investor here in Egypt as a start, or maybe try to find a hardware incubator that will guide me through the proper social community/circle.

Do you have a company, will you, create one, alone, partnership?

I already have basic knowledge about startups and entrepreneurs, so I’ll try to initiate a startup that markets for the chandelier as a start for all arts department and photography students at my university, because I already know that they need such thing, so maybe I’ll make partnership with the university to provide a robust product for students to use. Then, the light studios for photography and artistic co-working spaces in egypt especially that they need variations in lights while shooting small projects and short videos.

How do you I fabricate? Do you get the money first and then fabricate

Because I have knowledge about the Egyptian market, they won’t buy or invest money in product that’s intangible, so I’ll make a fully functional prototype, to use in marketing and on investments meeting to get money for mass production. Probably I can use Fab Labs at the beginning for production for multiple versions or several chandeliers that will be sold or give away for the investor partners which will open the market eyes about my product, then maybe later on when I have a good capital and already established a team I could think about having my own machines.

How will you let the people know that you are selling a product?who is your market?

I’ll try to sell my product using social media platforms with making the university students as the target audience, also I have a lot of my friends who are majoring in my target majors, so I’ll help them by lending them my product and here in Egypt we get easily influenced by others, so others will start to ask about the product before having the paid investor ads. or sponsored Facebook ads, not to mention that I’ll mention tech startup competition to secure a good head-start for the company capital.

    My markets so far are:-
  • Applied arts, architecture and photography university students.
  • Photography studios
  • Art spaces

Choosing a License:

First, I went to this elegant website to find out about different licenses and read several licenses permissions, conditions and limitations.

I choose I'm concerned about patents which lead me to the (Apache License 2.0) permissions, conditions and limitations which was the most suitable one:

Finally, I setteld on this license (Apache License 2.0)

This document is legally binding!
