Assignment 18: Applications and Implications

Propose a final project masterpiece that integrates the range of units covered, answering:

Learning outcomes:

  • Define the scope of a project

  • Develop a project plan

Have you answered these questions:

  • what will it do?

  • who has done what beforehand?

  • what materials and components will be required?

  • where will they come from?

  • how much will it cost?

  • What parts and systems will be made?

  • What processes will be used?

  • What questions need to be answered?

  • How will it be evaluated?

What will it do?
I'm going to make a smart toy helmet that looks like one of the characters from the new Star Wars saga. The objective of this project is that the children of scarce resources of my locality have a playful and learning alternative to be able to access a sophisticated toy. The helmet would help children develop spatial location skills.

Who's done what beforehand?
I have manufactured the external structure of the helmet. This was done in the assignment of "Wildcard Week" of week 17. In this assignment I developed the external structure of a helmet similar to a character in the saga of the Star Wars movie: The Stormtrooper.

What will you design?
I will design the internal structure of the helmet, the supports, the spaces for the location of the electronic cards, the spaces for the motors, the electronic cards and the interior spaces for the sensors.

What materials and components will be used?
To make the inner structure of the helmet I used resin, resin catalyst, cloth, cardboard paper and adhesive plastic. For the internal structure is going to use 3D printing input: MDF, screws, glue, silicone, motors, sensors, cables, resistors, capacitors and PCB.

Where will come from?
All materials will be provided by ESAN's FabLab in the city of Lima - Peru.

How much will they cost?
I do not plan to buy additional material to the necessary ones. This means that to make the smart helmet I will not invest additional money.

What parts and systems will be made?
The helmet will have a set of lights that will light depending on the proximity of other people. If a person approaches 5 centimeters the lights will be red. If the person moves away, the lights will change from tonality to the color blue. The helmet will send warning signals through a Led screen on the proximity of people on the back indicating the position of the people nearby. In the same way the helmet will move using engines according to the voice volume of the person who is using it.

What processes will be used?
For this assignment, the processes of additive and subtractive manufacturing will be used. The additive manufacturing process will be used to print in three dimensions the entire internal structure of the helmet and spaces to house the electronic cards, sensors and motors. The subtractive manufacturing process will be used in the milling of electronic cards.

What questions need to be answered?
I need to know how to design the internal structure of the helmet, how to do so that the cards, devices and motors are attached to the inner part of the helmet? How do I operate the engines? How do I give energy to the cards ?, Which programming language is the most appropriate to program the cards ?, How do I connect and program the microcontrollers ?, What care should I have so that the use of the helmet does not harm the user ?, etc.

How will it be evaluated?
The assignment will be evaluated by a focus group made up of children from 4 to 5 years old. These children will play with the helmet and answer questions about the appearance of the toy, its functionality, about its comfort, about what the helmet can do with the installed sensors and about whether the parents of the children or the teachers would use the helmet to teach Children how to develop spatial location skill.
