Week 1

Principles and Practices

Plan and sketch a potential final project

Learning outcomes:

Final Project idea:

My final project idea came to my mind in the middle of the second week when I was still doubting about what project to do as I was not sure if I could and if I wanted to do the ones that I had thought (you can see them at the bottom part of this page).
My back was hurting as I am usually not sitting propperly when I am working and I thought that it will be nice to have a device that you could wear and that tells you when you am sitting bad and also helps you to correct it. I draw the idea that I had in my head and what features I wanted the project to have:
In order to illustrate my idea I did these sketches in Illustrator. I took the images from Google.

Description of the problem that I aim to solve.

Existing models:

I did some reseach to know what models already existed and I found these three that I am showing in the next picture, the images are from their website. The two first ones are devices that you allocate in your back and whenever you are not sitting correctly the device will vibrate so you can change it.

  1. Upright
  2. Lumo
The third one is an exo skeleton that the employees of Ford, the car company are using. This skeleton was created by Ekso Bionics, a company that creates them not only for workers but also for improvings people's health.

State of art:

I aim to create a posture corrector that can be worn, for example, while you are working or driving for a long time. The first aproaches I will do towards its development will be:
- Creating a small board that detects the body position and inclination
- Once it receives the position, send an output if it is not the correct one. This output can be a small buzz or a vibration.
- Create a cast to cover the device.
- Create a solid structure with 3D printing, considering the shape of the back, simillar to the system that big backpacks have.
- Develop an App that receives this information and gives you feedback of your progression, and also that inludes some exercises of how to improve it.

Final goal:

Previous Final Project ideas:

At the beggining I was not certain about what I will do as a Final Project. Two ideas that had come to my mind are the ones you can see in the pictures, but I ended up changing them for the posture corrector one:

Idea I: Portable dental turbine:

My first idea is to create a portable dental turbine like the one you can see on the left of the first picture, which it's usually attached to the dentist chair. Two years ago during an international volunteering I was helping one of my dentist friends while she was doing some regular checkups to the people of the village and she told me that most of them had caries but she was not able to do anything as for doing the fillings she needed a turbine. That's when I started to think if it would be possible to create this tool in a way that you could take it to different places.
Problem: the problem with this idea is that, after researching, I found out that these turbines rotate at 400.000 rpm, which implies using a very powerful engine, and I am not sure if this will be possible.

Idea II: Active leg prosthesis:

Following the idea of the prosthetic hand that was developed in the Fab Lab Madrid CEU, I thought about creating a similar one for the leg. This leg will also include some sensors and electrical components that will enable the subject not only to walk, but also to be able to overcome obstacles according to which muscles are active in every movement. I did a bit of research to see what features I wanted to include in this leg and I found a very advanced one, the Symbionic Leg 3, which has implanted sensors that make the prosthesis move based on which sensor picks up an impulse. In my case the idea would be to put some sensors in the leg, that become active when a muscle does some strength.
