What is a Fab Lab?

The concept of Fab Lab was born in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from a subject called "How to make (almost) anything", whose principle is to give the possibility to any individual to create a passive or intelligent object by itself . The Fablabs network was born in the MIT Media Lab, with the collaboration of two groups, the "Grassroots Invention Group" and the "Center for Bits and Atoms" (CBA), the latter being the ones in charge of the project.

Fablab was born as a project to bring anyone to technologies that allow them to develop numerous projects according to the objectives that are proposed. The CBA has managed to have a digital manufacturing laboratory that meets high standards where different scale solutions can be attacked, with the goal of developing molecular technology that allows implementing devices for the development of multiple projects.

A "FabLab" is a manufacturing laboratory with a range of computer controlled machines that cover a wide range of production at different scales and with different materials to produce almost anything.

Around the world a network of Fablabs has been developed, these centers consist of workshops with teams of a few thousand dollars with the purpose of bringing people to these digital manufacturing technologies from different angles and that people transform their environment, to meet the needs of the culture and society in which they are immersed. The activities in these Fablabs vary according to their situation, from the study of materials and technological development, to the punctual help and training of people who lack basic knowledge in these areas, research is carried out in alternative energies, in health, agriculture, etc.
