Computer Aided Design.

this week assignements are:

  • Model experimental objects/part of a possible project in 2D and 3D software
  • Shown how you did it with words/images/screenshots
  • Included your original design files

Draw.

when i'am having and idea, it start always in the same manner, i'am having this perfect idea i can see really far, with lot of Fog in front of it. i can see a silhouette of this idea in a way like the Allegory of the Cave of plato.(yup, i just compared myself to plato.)

So the first thing i try to do is to sketch it really fast on my sketchbook, i'm not good at all on drawing, but it let me remember this perfect idea in this fog,and be able to comming back later on it, and let me know if this this perfect idea in this fog was really great or just a mirage.
Most of the time when i'm having this type of idea, i'm starting directly to try to find how to transform it to "reality" and for this part i'm using Sketchup.[insert some sketch here.]

Sketchup

Sketchup was always my main tools for designing piece, i found this tool really easy to use, and powerfull, we can go on it and make almost any object we want, it will never tell you that is'nt the good way to go.
This tool leave you with lot of space for creativity. I don't know how to skectch, i was never really good on drawing stuff, with sketchup i am able to make an idea i have in my mind really quickly and making some change as fast.
when i need to iterate for looking of the best way to do something. it's my main tool.
When you want to start to make something and be able to be back later for making somme adusjtement and when you want to export an STL file with the free license, is not the best tool. it's why i decided to invest more time in learning Fusion360.

Learning Fusion360

this week i learned to use Fusion360.
imageofLampadaire. I already started to make small projects with this software but never something that big like one of my final project.
So for making my "Lampadaire" i started by looking for picture of lampadaire on pinterest, the perfect picture for modelisation need to be a front picture with less angle as possible. with more detail as possible. my need for this image is to have a silhouette.
With this picture we have some beautiful backlight who's be perfect for modeling.

I inserted this image on Fusion360, and made a silouhette of the image using the line tool.
When the silouhette was finished, i used the Revolve function of fusion for making the first draft.
after some adjustement i was enough satisfied for making a second draft with some improvement.
in the second draft i was thinking about the tools i will make it. My first vision of the lamp, was in wood and acrylic, but for being able to see what will be the size, without spending too much time & money on it, i choose to think my piece for being able to make it with some 3Dprinting, with enough margin, for being able to make it in wood later.
First thing was making a silhouette, with 4 mm shell at least, everywhere. for 3D printing it, i know Ultimaker3 can only print piece lower than 200mm, and my object is 400mm without the hat & plexyglass. my piece is to big for the Ultimaker3 we have on our lab, so i decide to cut in three part. for that i made a thread for an easy assembly. buttom, up and the "hat", i made a thread between the bottom and the up parts for making the assembling a bit easier, the hat is totaly separate it will joint with some acrylic sheet (or epoxy?)

Discovering FREECAD

imageofreecad. For the last part of this week i tried to discover some new tool like FREECAD, really powerful, it will give me an alternative to fusion360, if i want to go full opensource. i tried to look if i could find some of the function i'm using in fusion360 and i can find some of them really easily, i like this type of software, WYSIWYG Type. where i can try to learn by myself without any tutorial.

Inkscape.

This week i was Really more into 3D software that 2D, i think Inkscape is a great tool for 2D vector, so i made the half silhouette of a lamp with it. it's great for that. i can zoom in make the perfect shape with a vector line and zoom out watching the result. for doing that, it's really simple, you just have to use the Pen tool. With Ctrl+C and CTRL+V we can copy past the path we made. and with horizontal symmetry i transform my duplicate path to have it in the good way!

Troubleshooting

I tried to improve in maximum my knowledge on fusion360, that was great, but i didn't manage my time perfectly for giving more time to other software like OPENSCAD OR Rhino, i need to work on my time management for the next week.

What i've learned

i really improved my knowledge on Fusion360, i watched several hours of tutorial on it and i discovered some new tool like freecad that i didn't know it exist.
