Computer-Aided Design

Assignments

Model (draw, render, animate, simulate, ...) a possible final project, and post it on your class page

  • Evaluate and select 2D and 3D software
  • Demonstrate and describe processes used in modelling with 2D and 3D software

  • Summary of the week

I have little experience about 2D design and 3D design. For 2D design, I know some basic function about Photoshop and Illustrator, cause I used to cooperate with some designers to make the booklet for our educaiton kit. And I know some basic skills about Solidworks, at my workplace, engineers take Solidworks as teaching tools for mechanical design aimed 7-16 years old students.

    2D Designing and Modelling

    Adobe Photoshop CC

For compressing the GIF (Graphics Interchange Format), I have used Adobe Photoshop CC software. Photoshop is a raster graphics editor which can edit and compose raser imags in multiple layers and supports masks, alpha compositing and sceral color models including RGB,CMYK,CIELAB,sopt clor and duotone.

The basic features I use for editing pictures is save for web. I open the GIF in Photoshop, I navigate the top bar, File> Save for web where I can adjust the image size as I need. Then click save , I can check the total size of the GIT to see if it meets the upload needs. Easy and fast.

And also we'll use graphics tablet to sketch some cartoons and partens and then use Photoshop to put onto different layers and add some text.

    Inkscape

My local tutot Yufei Ma introduced some basic skills about Inkscape for me. It is a free and open source vector graphics editor.and also beginner-friedly, without any experience, we can easily make something. I wanna make a logo for my blog which name is innoventure. I follow the video Inkscape Tutorial: Line Art Logo Text

First of all, from the top bar, by navigating in File > Document properties I changed the display units as px and do not show page border.

Then from top bar,by navigating View -Zoom 1:1, click the custom mode and zoom 1:1.

For drawing the logo, I chose the left tool bar the Create circles , pressed ctrl at the same time to draw a perfect circle. Then top bar, Path-Object to path

Right click on the circle, duplicate, and I got 5 cirles. Create circles , pressed ctrl at the same time to draw a perfect circle. Then top bar, Path-Object to path

Then clicked on the right bar Align center on vertical and horisontal. Top bar, Path-Combine

Press B to draw a parten to include the semicircle ,then top bar Align center on vertical and horisontal. Top bar, Path-Cut path

Now we can choose which part to move.

After drawing other partens, I got my inno logo.

    3D Designing and Modelling

I chose Solidworks to make 3D modelling.

    Solidworks

Solidworks is a famous solid modelling CAD (computer-aided design) and CAE (computer-aided engineering) tool. At MG Space, we use Solidworks for an engineering teaching tool for 7-16 years old students. I learnt how to use this tool with my coworker Yuanhan Lin who is a mechanical engineer.

I tried some practice projects, to make a hammer and an Ipnone X model. And also , I made a Thor's hammer by myself.

    Practice Solidworks

With the help of Maker T, I made the holder part of my final project with Solidworks and adjust it with Autodesk Inventor.

For futher 3D modelling test , I chamfering the part and transfter it in stl format.
