Final Project

What problem to solve?

My work experience made me think about the lack of access to technology in some vulnerable or non consolidate communities but also with out forget the importance of just playing on the street. "like the old times"

Who is this for?

I'd like to perfomance technology with the ones don't much know about it or simply kids specially or communities in general that think technology is a computer, an app, social networks or even the last cellphone model.

What is it?

I want to combine technology with no technology, a device that you can play with it but also you can just leave during the play, creating a fusion between how they learn with technology in their hands but also following game intructions to forget about the technology. This device could be a wooden device using augmented reality, voice recognition, projection mapping or even just typing and responding, basically to play with it. This device can divide in 3, something that look like a break the rock in 3 pieces.

Children through augmented reality could watch on the device screen elements that are not on the street or start playing by marking a game on the street.

There are recycle pieces that you can find always on the street, What if we attached the mecanism to the piece and let it use so commuinities also can learn how to recycle materials.

Divice principal ideas

My device design concept started with the idea of making something that a kid or anyone can recognize very easily and i wanna have something that they can be familiar with, so I came out with a rock or stone, specifically a river stone.

I don't want that people play with a stone so I decide to divide it in 3 parts, almost kind of similar size and for now with straigh cuts but also it could be like an organic cut as well.

For assignment 3 - Computer-aided design

I decided to continue my assignments developing the device design such as computer-aided design, computer-controlled cutting and 3D printing so far, using one of the 3 pieces.

For assignment 4 - Computer-controllin cutting

For the assignment 3 & 4, I used Rhinoceros for 3D modelling and a Grasshopper definition to get a cutting waffle method, this is one of the possibilities that I will explore.

For assignment 6 - 3D scanning & printing

For the 6th assignment I 3D modelled the handle for one of this 3 stone pieces. For now only works introducing few fingers in order to hold strong the device.

This is how the 3D printed handle looks attached to the wooden waffle first test shape device.

To understand a bit better so far:

The GREEN area shows the assignment # 4, one of the 3 divide pieces, the skin case it could be in different process, a wooden structure or in resine or plastic with process in molding and casting. I still prefer good and light wood.

The ORANGE area shows the assignment 6, the handle in 3D print process. The opennig cross the entire piece in order to introduce 2-4 finger "depends if children or adult" and hold the piece in case users also need to run.

In the BLUE area is where the screen is gonna attach. The divice bottons will be on this area or on the skin case area.

I have the opportunity to meet Calin & Joaquin in the Fab Lab Zoi, a group of enthusiasts passing by, who work with augmented reality in their collective ID Collective, they will share key information with me.

"Frog Design has a case study named Yibu which includes five crafted wooden toys embedded with sensing technology, which are connected to a character experiencing environmental challenges on the screen. Children who play the game learn about the world around them and feel empowered to positively influence it." Frog Design
