Week 6 - 3D Scanning and Printing

Assignment

  • group assignment:

    • test the design rules for your 3D printer(s)
  • individual assignment:

    • design and 3D print an object (small, few cm3, limited by printer time) that could not be made subtractively
    • 3D scan an object (and optionally print it)

Individual Task Notes

I want to make a new seat for my desk chair at home, and due to the geometric nature of my ideas, I thought it would be a good opportunity to test out geometrical patterns on a small scale.

Because of the bowl-like shape (Images coming soon) it would be difficult to create with subtractive methods without a couple of passes.

I really like these 3D printed Stereographic projections, essentially Mathematical Art.

I'd really like to test the FormLabs stereolithographic printer this week - but it wasn't working last I checked so we shall have to see.

Klein Bottles

When Niel presented the weeks asignment I instantly started thinking about Klein Bottles.

Klein Bottle Glass

Klein Bottle CAD

Due to their self intersecting geomatry and internal chambers, it is impossible to produce subtractivly.

So to have something to show for the assignment if printer issues or queues were encountered, I decided to make a small klein bottle first.

In the past I created a Klein bottle model for 3D printing, although appear to have lost the CAD files. I also did some section prints to show how the internal structure is supposed to work (as shown below)

This model does not create a proper klien bottle, as the half section print I did doesn't produce a mobius strip. (Two of the walls merged due to the filiment thickness and model parameters)

Solidworks

I designed another Klein bottle in Solidworks, using revolves, lofts, and a swept profiles.

Which went a bit like this:

Klein Bottle 2 Production

I compiled my screenshots of the production process of this model into a single graphic to save site space and brain space for description. This is a fairly simple model (probably over complicated) which I do not feel needs much proceedural explanation.

Klein Render 1

I applied a clear appearance to the model, and rendered it to show what the final thing should look like inside

Printing

I am not sure yet how to effectively compress video files (there are a couple and shall go here if I work that out)
