Week#2

Computer-Aided Design

This is the 2nd week of Deploma in Fab Lab, the learning of this is Computer-Aided designing. the main task is to make 2D and 3D designs in different softwares.
Assignment
Model (raster, vector, 2D, 3D, render, animate, simulate) a possible final project, and post it on your class page.
2D Design
Graphic Dsign softwares can be classified into two catagories.
Raster:
Raster (pixelited) format is also known as bit maps. This is a very popular mode of 2D graphics design. Some of the commonly used Raster software are:
  • (Windows BitMap)
  • (Paint)
  • (Photoshop)
  • (Gimp)
  • These raster softwares are very popular since all photos are raster; however there are numerous drawbacks:
  • Manipulation (resizing) of an image tends to distort it.
  • Raster images tend to have larger file size.
  • Raster image size enhancement may not be possible.
  • Vector:
Vector based softwares are a touch more complicated to work with. However they provide features to create (render) high quality graphics.these images never loose their resolution or look blur, doesn't matter how much we scale it or zoom-in it. The edges of vector images always look smooth no matter how large we make it
Some of the commonly used Raster software are:
    (Inkscape) (Adobe Illustrator)
    Inskscape
For the first part of this assignment I have to make a vector image and 2D design, so I chose to work on Inkscape as this is an opensource software. There are numerous tutorials available on youtube teaching how to work with inkscape. It makes sense to setup the canvas size,, units and grid size to begin with.
In starting I watched some tutorials and searched for the bars of the inkscape.
    Some tutorials that I followed:[1] [2] and [3] .

    Inkscape platform
I tried some sketches on inkscape.
  • First I import my image from file option from menu bar.
  • Then I clicked on the filter and select bur. (there are aslo other options in fiters:colors, distrot, image effect etc)
  • Then I adjusted the opacity and blur the image in percentage(0-100)

  • As we know Inkscape is a very powerful software, i tried some different commands like grouping, cloning, tracing and many other functionalities.
    Trace the image:
  • Import the image.
  • Select the image you want to trace
  • Click on the path from menu bar.
  • Select the trace bitmap and adjust the mode according to your need.
  • Press ok.
  • Separate the trace layer to th image.

  • Grouping:
  • Select the all entities you want to group.
  • Click on the Object.
  • Select the grouping option.
  • so it is done, now I have a single object.

    Inkscape
    Gimp
The next software I used gimp, as we know gimp is a raster software, GIMP ( GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free and open-source raster graphics editor, we mostly use gimp for image retouching and editing, free-form drawing, converting between different image formats, and more specialized tasks.
    So i tried some sketches.

  • Open the GIMP.
  • Click on the new file.
  • Adjust the size you that you need.
  • Prees ok.
  • On the top-left of screen there are many option select any One.
  • )I selected the eclipse and rectange and made a rectangle and eclipse.
  • On the top-right of screen there are many options like brush editor, gradient editor, document history, fonts, pattrens etc.
  • I selected the patterens.(there are many patterns of food, wood, plants, stone etc).
  • I selected different patterns and dragged ont the eclispe and rectangle.

  • Click on the top-left and select the text option.
  • Adjust the size, font, etc.
  • >
  • Write the text there.

  • Gimp platform

Next i tried some different tools of gimp like images, filters, colors, layers etc.
We can adjust the color curves of image and other things.

  • Import the image on GIMP.
  • Click on the color from menu bar.
  • Select the curves.
  • Now adjust the color curves.(shown in the image).

  • Used Layer tool

    3D Design
To work on 3D Graphics there are two types of software available for this.
    >Non-Parametric 3D Graphic Software
    >Parametric 3D Graphic Software
    Rhinoceros
Now I am going to try some work in Rhinoceros, we have download its 90 Days trail version.
I have tried to make the rough model of my final project in this 3D software.

  • Open the Rhinoceros.
  • There is four perspective(top, left, right and perspective). you can select any one or work on same screen of four.
  • Click on the solid tools.you have different options: cone, pyramid, sphere cylinder etc.
  • I selected the cylinder according to my project's design need.
  • Draw a cylinder in the isometric view.
  • Click on the cylinder again and make a small on the previous cylinder.
  • )Click on the perspective and select the shaded option. for better view.
These are some screenshots of the model.

    Rhinoceros platform
  • Open the Rhinoceros.
  • Click on the solid tools and I Select the rectangle .
  • Make a reactangle.
  • Select the fillet command.
  • set the radius of fillet in the cammand line.
  • Select the two planes that you want to fillet.
  • Press enter.
  • Do fillet from all sides.
  • Click on the standard.
  • Select the text Object.
  • Set the font, size etc adn wite text there.
  • Press ok.
  • Now place the text where you want with the help of your computer mouse.

  • Model

    SolidWorks
SolidWorks is a solid modeling computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) computer program that runs on Microsoft Windows. SolidWorks is published by Dassault Systèmes. According to the publisher, over two million engineers and designers at more than 165,000 companies were using SolidWorks as of 2013.
In starting of solidworks I did wathch and follow some tutorials to see how Solidworks commands will help me in making differnent thing, after some efforts I was able to design in Solidworks and i feel solidworks very interesting.

Some tutorials that I followed on youtube:[1] and [2] .

    Desigining:
  • Open the solidworks.
  • Click the file and select new file.
  • There are three options(part, assembly adn drawing) select drawing for a part desigining.
  • Press ok.
  • There are three plane(top, front , roght) select the plane and click on it and then click on the sketch.
  • Set the Unit. I selected the MMKS unit system.
  • Select the spline and draw a randam spline design
  • Select the polygon and set the parameters.
  • Draw a poygon on the bottom of spline.
  • Click on the Features.
  • Click on the swept bose/base.
  • Edit it and click on the okay

  • The result of my effort is shown below:
  • This is a random and rough designs.

    Design

Now the next are the 3D designs of my final project.
    Desigining:

  • Open the solidworks.
  • Make a new file.
  • Set the palne and unit.
  • Click on the Sketch and click on the Circle.
  • Draw a circle with the dimensions you need.
  • Click on the features.
  • Click on the Extruded Boss/Base.
  • Put the value for extrusion.
  • Press ok.
  • Again draw a small circle on the previous circle.
  • Extrude it like previous one.

  • Project model

    Desigining:

  • Open the solidworks.
  • Make a new file
  • Set the palne and the unit.
  • Select a rectangle and draw it with dimensions you need.
  • Go to the features command and make it extrude.
  • Make five rectangles with eachothers and extrude it and make a Box.
  • Go and make an other rectangle small then previous rectangle on the sketch of previous one rectangle.
  • Click on the features and click on the extruded cut.
  • Set the cut extrusion value and press ok.
  • Same like the last one rectangle make a circle ont the base side rectangle.
  • Make an extrudede cut of circle.
  • Now go for the Text.
  • Select plane for text and Click on the text option
  • Set the text font, size and others. and write the text and press ok.
  • Place the where you want with the help of computer mouse.

  • Project Model
