13. Applications and implications

Individual assignment

Propose a final project masterpiece that integrates the range of units covered, answering: What will it do? Who’s done what beforehand? What will you design? What materials and components will be used? Where will come from? How much will they cost? What parts and systems will be made? What processes will be used? What questions need to be answered? How will it be evaluated? Your project should incorporate 2D and 3D design, additive and subtractive fabrication processes, electronics design and production, microcontroller interfacing and programming, system integration and packaging Where possible, you should make rather than buy the parts of your project Projects can be separate or joint, but need to show individual mastery of the skills, and be independently operable

RE-LEASH

I started drawing on a paper some ideas and finaly i had an prototype, i also had an name The project would be called Let the dog out (L.T.D.O) or Eltdoo. But after 2 days of thinking about my idea and sharing it with my wife, we came up with a better name The project will be called RE-LEASH

Defining the problems:

  • The dogs are on a chain and can not get loose when i am not home.
  • They know at 17:00 PM they get loose and get their diner, so around that time they get anxcious.
  • The alarm off the house goes off, and i get an text message, but the dogs are chained.

Defining the solutions:

  • The dogs can get off the chain automatically, when i am not at home.
  • At a certain programmed time or when it gets dark the dogs get loose.
  • When the house alarm goes off, i can remotely unchain the dogs.

Research

After an research on the internet i could not find a solution for my problem, there where automatic gatedoors and feeders but no chain releasers. So i tought i will follow through with my idea and make a start of my idea. Because the RE-LEASH is an unique invention

Potential stakeholders: Here in Suriname lots of people have dogs, some are in a dog house, but most of them are on a chain. At day time the dogs are chained and in the afternoon when the owners get home the dogs get loose. These owners are my target group because what happens is that owners sometimes get late because of work or traffic But first off all it is a solution for MY problem!

Materials

The materials i will be using are the following

  • But the others things i will make myself, i designed a case in Thinkercad and the casing will be 3D printed with PLA or ABS filament
  • The PCB board i will design with a speaker and solenoid, optional is the photosensor.
  • The solenoid will also be a self made one.
  • The LED guide to show the light on top of the box will be a leftover lasercut
  • I am looking to make a mold for the hook of the dogchainlock myself.
  • The board will be programmed, time related so at the diner time and when it gets dark the dogchain lock will open up
  • The trick will be that the solenoid will pull the lockpin open and then the speaker will give a beep, the beep is important to let the dog know the lock is open.

Why is the photosensor optional? I would like to test this first because at first i did not wanted to use the time program but use the sensor to give a sign if it is dark. The problem can be that the dog lays down on the sensor and then it will be dark and the lock will open.

At the end of prototyping i used the following material and selfmade hardware

This is the list of components used for the RE-LEASH :

• - Dogchainlock turned into custom solenoid (selfmade)

• - Lipo battery 3.7 volt 10x20x20mm

• - PCB (milled and design)included with:

a) 1x ATTiny44

b) 2x 10K resistor

c) 1x 1K resistor

d) 1x LED (blue)

e) 2x Pinheaders 2X2

f) 1x Pinheader 2x3

g) 1x pinheader 1x2

h) 2x Diode

i) 1x Volt regulator

j) 1x Button

• - Speaker

• - Button (refurbished from an old remote)

• - LED guide was lasercut leftover

• - 3D printed case

## Process

So in short the procceses used where

  • Made a draft drawing 2D

  • 3D designing and printing for the case.

  • Milling and designing the board

  • Programming the board

  • LED is used as interface and counter, each blink is an hour

  • Pressing the powerbutton the LED starts blinking setting the release time

  • Chainhook is hacked and transformed into a solenoid

The testing and evaluating will be done on my own dog and after testing i will share it with my friends. Then i will get different test results and get feedback of them.
