19. Invention, intellectual property and income

This weeks assignment was to
- Develop a plan for dissemination of your final project.
- Prepare drafts of your summary slide (presentation.png, 1920 x 1080) and video clip (presentation.mp4, 1080p HTML5, 1 minute max, 10 MB max) and put them in your root directory

My final project

My final project is a led lamp made of laser-cut plywood. It has acrylic inner shade that is sandblasted, to have a matte finnish surface. The lamp has capacitive touch sensors that are made of vinyl-cut copper. Led strip is attached in 3D printed led holder. PCB boards are controlling the touch sensors and led lights. Lights can be brightened and dimmed with the touch sensors.

License selection

Creative Commons license is a copyright license which aims distribute creative work openly. It is common in every license in Creative Commons that the copyright will be retained in an author (licensor) while allowing others to copy, distribute, and derivate their work.

There are several types of Creative Commons licenses.

I am choosing Creative Commons with ShareAlike and NonCommercial for the non-software part of my project:

ShareAlike (sa)
- You let others copy, distribute, display, perform, and modify your work, as long as they distribute any modified work on the same terms. If they want to distribute modified works under other terms, they must get your permission first.

NonCommercial (nc)
- You let others copy, distribute, display, perform, and (unless you have chosen NoDerivatives) modify and use your work for any purpose other than commercially unless they get your permission first.

MIT License is meant for software works. It gives freedom to modify, distribute, sell or sublicense the software. However, the original license must be included in any derivative work.

Dissemination

I have no intention to commercialize my lamp. That is why I let others to use my work for non-commercial purposes. For example this project could be used to learn digital fabrication in a workshop where students’ task would be to create a similar lamp.
