Week 5: 3D Scanning and Printing

Group Assignment

Testing and characterists of the machine we used was in group assignment and was documented on this page.

Assignment

Test the design rules for your printer(s) (group project)

Design and 3D print an object (small, few cm) that could not be made subtractively

3D scan an object (and optionally print it

For this week the goal was learn how to scan and print in 3D, try different printers and scanners and see the difference among them.

Machines:
  • 3D Scanners
  • 3D Printers
  • softwares:
    • Cura 3.6
    • Sense
    • Materials:
      • PLA(Polylactic Acid)
      • 3D Scanner

I used 3D sense device for scanning, it goes with its software called "sense".

        3D sense device

I first installed the software for 3D sense in my PC

This is the home screen of the Sense software, shows different options of scanning, human or things.

I was scanning a human so I choose the first setting

        I scanned a colleague

These are the setting I used for CURA.

I printed the scanned person in the 3D printer

        This is the final object.

        3D DESIGN

The instruction on this part says to design and 3D print an object (small, few cm3, limited by printer time) that could not be made subtractively. For that I made a small box with a ball inside it.

First I sketched four squares that will be used as holding bims, and I extruded them from both sides

Now I connected the four bims and keeping hollow inside.

After closing the whole square with a hollow, I designed a ball inside so big that it can't be removed.

This is the final design look.

Now here is the printing of the our box.

still printing process from the top.

Now the printing is done, we remove it and clean the support prints.

Here is the final printed part.

        This is the hero shot!

3D printing allows printing complex design at an affordable cost than the tradition manufacturing systems; Printing on demand is easy since you only need the design file however there are some limitations/cons of 3D printing like type of material you can use and also the build size is limited to the size of the printer.

        Conclusion

3D scanning can't get every detail of the object which ends up creating something else. For 3D printing seem not able to print up to small details however it is real good the final printed work.
