Assignment List

  • Plan and sketch a potential final project, graduated students ☑

Projects I found to be outstanding from my research in past years are as follows:

Learning Outcomes: Communicate an initial project proposal

I did a brainstorm and narrowed it to 3 concepts.

I choose Iot furniture. Specifically, An office chair that makes coffee when you seat at the office chair.

1. Concept #1: Plants and Internet

To prevent making routers obsolete by giving them functionality. Using Internet to build a sense of community by sharing it.:

Internet pot

Internet tree

2. Concept #2: Smart table salt.

A salt container for the dinner table. Intelligent enough to tell user when its too much salt.

Using a light tell the user about it's salt intake.

  • Off = Not in use
  • Green = Used little salt
  • Yellow = Enough Salt
  • Red = Too much salt
  • A state where it automatically closes
  • Such item would prevent risk adverse users with heart condition and the old age taste deterioration that might not fully prevent the excess intake of salt. Especially in an elderly population.

    No sketch available.

3. Concept #3: Mixing a work chair and sensors, Iot Furniture Chair.

An office chair that makes coffee when you seat at the office chair.

  • A furniture seating experiment using sensors
  • Work chair in the office is a scenario where technology already exists.
  • Using digital fabrication to make a chair to sit comfortable and work longer hours without a back pain making more things as a result.
  • I have have experience working on furniture, making a office chair has always struck a cord.
  • Learning and understanding how to integrate IoT technology in consumer objects and furniture is the future, and I'm here to learn it.

To Conclude

I decided to go with concept #3 = IOT Furniture.

Specifically: the action on having a desk chair signal a coffee maker my arrival, and as an automatic reaction brew coffee automatically.

    Reasoning:
  • I'm attached to coffee! / I love it, and will gladly have it in my desk.
  • I know how make furniture, and making a desk chair is a project that has always been too complicated to create manually, yet with computer aided technology It will be done. Such as Open Desk does it.
  • Having sensors in chairs is something I have not seen in the market yet. Is something that will open doors to create new relationships with users, and its surroundings.
