Invention, Intellectual Property and Income

Introduction

The topic of this assignment is "Invention, Intellectual Property and Income". Nowadays we use a lot these words but do we really understand what is their right meaning? The goal of this week was to get the understanding and choose licences for my final project and think about its future opportunities.

So, I started with asking myself (and Google) question what is licence?

'A license is an official permission or permit to do, use, or own something'(from Wikipedia). There are more than one type of licenses. I decided to compare some of them:

General Public License

The GNU is a free software license, which guarantees end users the freedom to run, study, share and modify the software. The GPL is a copyleft license, which means that derivative work can only be distributed under the same license terms.

Lesser General Public License

LGPL (Lesser General Public License) accompanies some open source software that details how the software and its accompany source code can be freely copied, distributed and modified. The license only requires software under the LGPL be modifiable by end users via source code availability. For proprietary software, code under the LGPL is usually used in the form of a shared library, so that there is a clear separation between the proprietary and LGPL components. The LGPL is primarily used for software libraries, although it is also used by some stand-alone applications.

Creative commons

Creative Commons helps you legally share your knowledge and creativity to build a more equitable, accessible, and innovative world — unlocking the full potential of the internet to drive a new era of development, growth and productivity.

Here are The Licenses that are provided by Creative Commons.

Attribution 4.0 international (CC BY 4.0)

This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation. This is the most accommodating of licenses offered. Recommended for maximum dissemination and use of licensed materials.

Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0)

This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, and although their new works must also acknowledge you and be non-commercial, they dont have to license their derivative works on the same terms.

Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0)

This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial purposes, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. This license is often compared to copyleft free and open source software licenses. All new works based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also allow commercial use. This is the license used by Wikipedia, and is recommended for materials that would benefit from incorporating content from Wikipedia and similarly licensed projects.

Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-ND 4.0)

This license allows for redistribution, commercial and non-commercial, as long as it is passed along unchanged and in whole, with credit to you.

Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)

Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0)

This license is the most restrictive of our six main licenses, only allowing others to download your works and share them with others as long as they credit you, but they can’t change them in any way or use them commercially.

My Licence

For all my assignments and projects I have chosen the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) license. The license is easy to set up and it provides exactly the rights which I want to be effective for my projects.

My dissemination

I think that nowadays we have a plethora of opportunities to 'advertise' and disseminate a project for free. So, the first and most obvious are social networks and platform. In my personal opinion, the most great platforms are Instagram and Facebook. Here the strategic of friend of my friends can work. Additionally, website like Thingiverse and Instructables allow you to share your project with other people. In addition, Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform for gathering money from the public.

One more step would be visiting a Maker meetings and get feedback from people who are much more experienced than I am. Maybe that means that the project does need more improvement.
