Assignment 13 Applications and Implications

What will it do?

I want to build an infinity cube which converts the input of some sensors like pulse-sensors or inputs from buttons into a graphical representation. Maybe I will try to play little games on it I think that would be really funny and kind of confusing since everything is mirrored multiple times.

Who has done what beforehand?

One of the Assistants at my chair had build a simple prototype because he found some of the spy-mirrors I will use online. He tried to do it as a Icosahedron which did not work well since the whole construction was not stable. (I fell apart while transporting it to the Make Munich).
I thought it would be cool to control the lights somehow but the wiring of these prototypes was not that organised. Additionally some parts of the stand and the design of the whole thing were not how I wanted them to be so I decided to build one from the ground up myself. The instructable can be found here.

What materials I will use and where to get them

A detailed Bill of Materials can be found at the bottom of the page.
The BOM will be updated and the accurate prices will be added while I work on the project.

What parts and systems will be made?

Parts:
  • Mirrored cube
  • Wooden inlay to attach the Leds
  • Stand with base
  • Casings for the sensors
  • Decorations for the outside of the cube
Systems:
  • Led-controll-System
  • Adapter to attach different sensors

What processes will be used?

  • Laser cutter for the mirror parts of the cube
  • 3D Printer for the base and the decorations
  • Milling machine to produce own PCB boards
  • Soldering for the boards

What tasks need to be completed?

    • Calculate things for the cube
    • Cut corpus
    • Glue Leds
    • Cut Mirrors
    • Glue cube
    • Design and Print Cube Base
    • Design and solder electronics
    • Maybe mill base for sensor casing etc.

What other questions need to be answered?

The main question for me is how to I wire all the led-stripes in a way that I do not loose track while programming etc. Other Question will be how do I hide the wiring and how to make the whole construction stable?

What is the schedule?

    • Till end of April: Finish the construction sketches
    • Last week of April: Build the Main cube
    • First week of Mai: wire the LED
    • Second week of Mai: Make the electronics and start programming
    • Third week of Mai: Make the base
    • Last week of Mai: Wrap up the programming
    • June: Fix whats broken and assemble everything

How will it be evaluated?

Well since one of the goals is to play games on it I will ask different people to play with it to get their feedback.

Furthermore I will receive feedback from my instructor during the process.
