LASER CUTTING / CHARACTERIZE

Our lasercutter in FABLab Beijing is HUITIAN LASER 4060, which recives only DXF file with its own software provided with retailer called LaserCAD. We tried to test its performance under different speed, power and design. First of all, we built a test object in Antimony as shown below. Here we tried parametric design, as we defined the width of the cut-out parts as v.m. If we change this parameter, the group of cubes would change accordingly. As result, we found that we need to set 2.6mm in design file if we want to fit our 3mm wood board.

Here are some notes:

  • Make sure air/gas flow is open before cutting
  • Clean and adjust the optics if needed
  • Fixed fire can be used to locate laser head's position
  • Supervision is necessary

LASER CUTTING / DESIGN

This week, I've completed three projects with laster cutter and found it really fun to play with! Firstly, with the help of StippleGen, I managed to create a stripple picture with laser cutter. Unforturnately, we didn't have material other than 3mm wood. Think this will look amazing on copper tape.

Inspired by the popular game Monument Valley, I decided to make a 3D maze with stairs and platforms. The basic elements were designed in OpenSCAD and the mock-up can be seen as below. Parametric design was used here to control the width of the joints, the height of each stair and the number of stairs for each floor.

While Neil's lecture, I was obessed with the technique that can cut wood into a flexible sphere and think it would be really suitable for bag designing. So, I searched and found PLAAT, a simple wooden handbag made by two Europe designers. It has only 20 pieces and have all sold out, so I decided to make one by myself. I benefited a lot by using array function in this project. The final product and making process can be seen as below:

With deep love of Rick and Morty, I designed a sticker with its famous phrase Wubba Lubba dub-dub.
