Applications & Implications

Applications & Implications

Tasks:

Propose a final project that integrates the range of units covered.
Define the scope of a project
Develop a project plan

What will it do?

I will create an art piece that will create a random pattern using ferrofluid by changing the magnetic field.

Who's done what beforehand?

I have found multiple projects and experiments using ferrofluid. Which are:

Ferrolic

Watch ferromagnetic fluid travel across a blank surface like living creatures: undulating forward, dancing rhythmically
blobbing together in organic shapes to digitally display the current time. Ferrolic, a ferrofluid clock prototype by industrial designer Zelf Koelman.
Ferrolic was designed from a strong fascination for the magical material Ferro Fluid.
The natural dynamics of this fluid makes that this display bridges the gap between everyday digital screens and tangible reality.

The Living Liquid Display:

Ferrofluid Magnetic Liquid Display ! They call it the Living Liquid Display. Now available in two different designs, Hexagon and Pyramid.
Completely programmable allowing you to create your own shows to your own sound effects and music.
Other programmable features available, including lasers and special lighting effects.

Magnetic field experiment

This person experimented with ferrofluid and controlled it manually and it doesn’t implement the skills we learn in fabacademy.

What will you design?

I will design the structure of the project.
Design the PCB

What materials and components will be used?

Component Name DataSheet/Product Details Cost
ATMEGA328P Microcontroller Datasheet $0.7
Push Button Datasheet $0.35
Ferrofluid Product $20.99
Screws Product $0.2
Copper Wires Product $7.20

For the frame I will use :
PLA for 3D Printing for elctromagnatic holder.
Plywood for wooden structure.
Acrylic for some lasercut parts.

What is the schedule?
Make the electromagnatic
Test the ferrofluid.
Fabricate all mechanical part components and assemble them
Make the board
Write the code

What parts and systems will be made?

I will build the mechanical structure, build the ferrofluid container, build the PCB board, the electromagnet system and the LED system.

What processes will be used?

2D and 3D design
Laser cutting
3D printing
CNC Milling
Electronics Design & Production
Input and Output Devices

What questions need to be answered?

How the ferrofluid responds to a magnetic field?

How will it be evaluated?

The expected outcomes of the project, upon which the evaluation should be based, are:

- To design and fabricate a device that is aimed at moving ferrofluids by the effect of electromagnets.
the form of motion is yet to be decided as either vertically (spikes) or randomly over a horizontal plate

-To demonstrate a minimum level of practically causing motion in a ferrofluid , by using electromagnets .
motion will be random and not necessarily within any path
